“The Room Below is a deeply intense psychological thriller about grief, guilt and obsession, with an incredibly unsettling and unique creature dialling up the scares,” says writer/director Kurt Martin in a press release. “I am so excited to be in production alongside my dream cast of Alyssa Sutherland, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Bobby Gilchrist and Gilbert Bradman and world-class collaborators and crew.”
The Room Below marks Martin’s second feature film, following the well-received Moon Rock for Monday, again collaborating with producer Jim Robison of Lunar Pictures. Other producers on the film include Chris Chard for CME and Ty Linegar for MIK Studio, with Marc Furmie, William Ramsey, Colin Bates, Adam Callen, Samuel Levine, Roy Scott Macfarland, Clement Dunn, Emma Comley and actress Jaime King serving as executive producers. Alexandra Taussig (The Narrow Road to the Deep North, The Stranger) is a producer consultant. Make Up Effects Group (MEG), who worked on Talk to Me, are designing the creature.
The Room Below follows Mia (Sutherland, Evil Dead Rise), an expectant mother and children’s book author, who encounters strange happenings in her house, coinciding with a boy – who looks like her dead son – going missing. Consumed by grief, Mia’s behaviour draws the attention of a retired detective, intent on solving the case of the missing boy and much more.
