When and where is the 2020 Oscars?

The 2020 Oscars takes place on February 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. They start at 5 pm PT/8pm ET and they will be televised live by ABC on their website.

Who is up for awards at the 2020 Oscars?

The Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix is up for 11 nominations and is expected to pick up several, with Phoenix up for the ‘Performance by an actor in a leading role’ award. The Irishman is also predicted to do well, with both Joe Pesci and Al Pacino up for the award for ‘Performance by an actor in a supporting role’. Another film with multiple nominations is Once upon a time…in Hollywood.

There are also nominations for well-known actresses Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie. The famous directors Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Sam Mendes are no strangers to the awards and unsurprisingly they are all up for the ‘Achievement in directing’ award this year.

Interestingly, North Macedonia has received its first shortlisting for the film Honeyland, which is nominated for the International Feature Film category.

Can you get tickets for the 2020 Oscars?

If you are best friends with Brad Pitt, you might still struggle for a ticket, as they are very hard to come by. Tickets are invitation only but there is nothing stopping you heading to the Dolby Theatre to try and get a glimpse of the stars as they enter and exit the building. There will be some VIP afterparties that you could try and get invites for but unless you are a Hollywood regular, the chances are not too high that you will bag yourself an invite.

Travelling to the Oscars

If you are a big film fanatic then simply being in close proximity to these cinematic legends will no doubt be exciting, so if you are booking flights, the best airports to fly into is LAX or Bob Hope Airport. Next closest is Long Beach Airport which is around 30 miles out of Hollywood.

Accommodation in and around Hollywood is mostly very expensive, especially when there is a big event like the Oscars taking place. If you are looking for a budget-friendly option then the Best Western or Travelodge is probably your best chance.

Travel information

Australian citizens will require some form of travel authorisation to visit the US. As Australia is part of the Visa Waiver Program, you are able to apply for an ESTA for Australian Citizens instead of a US visa. The ESTA application is quick and easy to do and you should get a fast response that will provide you with travel authorization to visit the US and head to Hollywood during the Oscars.
