Whale Rider director, Niki Caro, will become one of the handful of women to direct a movie budgeted at over $100 million dollars when she takes the reins of Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Mulan.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Caro beat out Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins and TV director Michelle MacLaren for the gig. That’s all the news to hand at the moment, but it certainly is interesting. The jury is still out on whether the seemingly endless slate of Disney live remakes is a net positive or negative – odds are the response to Beauty and the Beast will tell the tale on that – but Caro is a great director, so if anyone has a shot at making a fist of Disney’s gender-swapping historical epic/musical, it’s her.
