In these right-on tribal times, it was only a matter of time before someone launched a streaming platform focused on female-led content. Australia’s Samantha Laidlaw is that someone, a former Screen Queensland exec, who has launched Femflix with promotional support from screen industry bodies such as WIFT Australia, Bus Stop Films, Film Fatales, Screen Vixens, Primetime Network, and Diversity in Australia Media.

“Our goal is to shine a spotlight on female-filmmakers both in Australia, New Zealand and from around the world and to increase availability of female-centric storytelling for audiences,” said Laidlaw in a statement. “As a woman, it’s important to see yourself reflected on screen and have access to
storytelling through a female-gaze.”

The line-up of titles at launch is limited – Tracks, 52 Tuesdays, Strangerland, The Song Keepers, Janis, I Am No Bird, Ready to Fly, Becoming Traviata, Palo Alto, The Third Wife, Suffragette, Exhibition – but according to Laidlaw, she aims to keep the library capped at around 200 titles to reduce ‘scroll fatigue’ and ‘to build a relationship with subscribers through Femflix’s curatorial approach, prioritising quality over quantity’. A commendable strategy but one that we would be concerned about in this content heavy world and so many streamers to choose from.

Femflix is offering a 30-day free trial and a monthly fee of $8.99 AUD. You can join Femflix here.
