Movies about gambling, have been more so than any others, and these films have an inherent thrilling edge because they involve a lot of risks. Seeing someone putting their personal and other people’s lives and limbs on the line for that one massive score is the stuff that makes most blockbuster movies.

The typical scenario of genres such as these is almost always around the main actor or actress who, through their gambling activities, go for a motherlode job to win millions, before disappearing into the sunset. The intensity and action of these movies grips even the most average audience.

Casino (1995)

The movie Casino is yet another top 1995 dramatic thriller. It is based in Vegas, around the life of casino boss Frank Roserthals known to many as “Lefty”. Other similar main real characters include his lifelong childhood friend and mobster Anthony Spilotro.

A film based on both fiction and fact, it follows Rosenthal’s criminal underworld connections, where both he and Spilotro ran four unlicensed and illegal casinos back in the 1970s. The movie follows various themes of murder, revenge, love, and adultery.

It follows the story of how the mob eventually lost control of all the money they had made and the award-winning performance of well-known actors and actresses like Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and James Woods makes this a show stopper that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.

21 (2008)

With names like Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess, a 2008 movie based on the non-fictional book “Bringing Down the House” follows the plot of “Ben”, a mathematics major at MIT, who gets accepted into Harvard Medical School but cannot afford the $300,000 tuition. The pressure of attaining a scholarship through winning over his professor makes for the reason behind him and his peers looking for other ways to earn some extra bucks.

The filming took place in famous venues such as Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, the Red Rock Casino, and the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. Ben and a group of MIT students and their professor begin to figure out ways to count cards while playing Blackjack resulting in them winning millions. They frequent Las Vegas and eventually become high-roller players.

This is undoubtedly a good mix of action, fiction and fact, and is one to appeal to movie fans and based on real-life events. With plot twists around every corner from the casino operators, this film brings some thrilling action to the table.

Broke (2016)

Based on a sports betting scenario in Queensland, Australia, the movie Broke is written around the events that took place in 2000 during the Australian rugby league matches and follow star “BK”, who got involved in match-fixing scandals and was kicked off his team. This led to him becoming an alcoholic and is a true story about the themes surrounding addiction and recovery.

With the help of some fans, BK gets back on his feet and builds the respect of his home town once again. The attraction of sports betting and casinos in Australia is at the forefront of this film. The writer of the movie won an award for the best screenplay at the 2016 SENE Film, Music and Art Festival.

Molly’s Game (2017)

Moving onto the slightly recent movies based on real-life characters, Molly’s Game is a true-life American biographical crime drama based on gambling, and focuses on the main character, Molly Bloom. At 26 years old, the former Olympic enthusiast’s life takes a turn when she suffers a skiing injury. After which she gets acquainted with the gambling world and starts to arrange underground poker games and some of the biggest ones ever in the history of poker tables.

A strong female lead, Molly faces some trouble after she catches the eye of the authorities because of her exorbitant winnings. To avoid the attention, she moves to New York and continues there, and some of Hollywood’s A-list actors join her. A cast that includes Idris Elba, Bill Camp, Joe Keery, Jeremy Strong, Michael Cera, Jessica Chastain and Kevin Costner, to name a few. What makes it even more interesting is the addition of Russian mobsters and the FBI.

This is one to keep you entertained till the final credits. It has won several awards including Academy Awards, Writers Guild of America Awards, Golden Globes, and BAFTA Awards.
