Let’s get together at The Deb…
“The Deb delivers where it counts. Right out of the gate, it’s Hairspray meets High School Musical.” Variety
Bold, outrageous, and funny, The Deb is a vibrant Australian musical about two wildly different teenage cousins who start out at odds, but ultimately find common ground, and unexpected friendship, at their town’s annual debutante ball. At the heart of the story is lovable farm girl and high-school outsider Taylah Simpkins, who sees the upcoming Debutante Ball – “the Deb” – as her one shot to reinvent herself and finally step into the spotlight. But her carefully laid plans are thrown into chaos when her sharp-tongued, big-city cousin Maeve is shipped off to Taylah’s drought-stricken hometown of Dunburn. Unimpressed and unfiltered, Maeve quickly labels the whole affair a “heteronormative shit-show”, turning tradition on its head and shaking up the town in the process. As the cousins clash, collide, and slowly begin to understand each other, their shared quest for a little recognition becomes something deeper. Directed by Rebel Wilson and featuring a standout ensemble including Charlotte MacInnes, Natalie Abbott, Stevie Jean, Shane Jacobson, Tara Morice and Rebel Wilson herself, The Deb is an Aussie delight.
The Deb is released in cinemas on April 9.
In April, every member of ClubInk (our own movie club, details here) receives an in-season double pass to The Deb.
