What could have been a sweet, creepy super hero flick from Mexican oddity-wrangler Guillermo del Toro is now a rather ugly-looking offering from the DC Animated stable. Justice League Dark sees Batman recruiting magician and conman John Constantine* to head up a group of supernatural supers in order to fight a demonic invasion, because Batman is apparently a terrible judge of character in this universe.
There’s fun to be had here, as Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman and Swamp Thing get trotted out, and that final line is a killer, but this really looks cheap and rushed. Oh, and it’s rated R (MA15+ to you and me), if that means anything to you.
Batman the Animated Series feels like such a long time ago. Justice League Dark, however, is due out on home release early next year.
*Hey, at least he’s voiced by Matt Ryan.
