Toni Erdmann is a brilliant film – we gave it a rare perfect score – so it should come as no surprise that subtitle-averse America, Paramount in particular, is planning to remake it. What is surprising is that, according to Variety, legendary screen actor Jack Nicholson is coming out of retirement to play the lead role.

Nicholson was last seen on screen in 2010, in How Do You Know? for James L. Brooks and I’m Still Here for Casey Affleck. Word is that Nicholson – can we call him Jack? – loves the original movie, which is in competition for the Best Foreign Language Oscar, and pitched the idea of the remake himself. That means we’ll be getting an engaged and enthusiastic Jack.

There’s no director attached as yet, though the pivotal role of the daughter will be played by Kristen Wiig. No doubt, all of this will do wonders for the original’s chances come Oscar night.
