Green Bush, Talk Radio, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Airheads, Good Morning, Vietnam, etc, etc, the radio station has proven fertile ground for cinema, with Luke Agius’ indie The Undesirables [love the title!) the latest to embrace the contained but outward looking potential of this setting.
His comedic drama is set in a community radio station, and stars Alexander Grant (Dive Club) and TikTok creator Molly McCrann (@Moldoga), with a supporting cast that includes Elle Dawe (Housos), Sandy Sharma (Heartbreak High), Tommy Ropati (Prosper, Streets of Colour), Georgie Cufone ad Joshua Shediak.
According to a press release, The Undesirables follows Ashton and Leah, ‘dynamic community radio hosts navigating the challenges of a late-night community radio show at the newly revamped SWR99.9 FM radio station in Blacktown. Ashton’s world is upended when he learns of his rockstar girlfriend Casey’s impending international tour, sparking a comedic and heartwarming adventure to convince her to stay. With the unwavering support of his best friend Leah, Ashton grapples with the inevitability of change, exploring themes of life, heartbreak, and self-discovery in your twenties, set against the rich cultural backdrop of the Western Sydney music scene.’
The Undesirables was a finalist at the Inner West Film Fest 2023 Pitching Competition, was shortlisted for the Australians in Film Untapped Initiative 2023, and has received support from Arts and Cultural Exchange (ACE), and was awarded a grant from the Blacktown City Creative Arts Fund.
