Visionary director Rupert Sanders, who impressed with his first film, Snow White and the Huntsman back in 2012, is finally (we know why it may have taken him this long to follow up such an enormous hit, but that’s gossip, right?!) returning with an adaptation of the manga Ghost in the Shell, which was adapted into an anime feature film in 1995 by Mamoru Oshii, and proved a real trailblazer for anime around the world. Based on his previous work, Sanders seems the perfect candidate to bring the ambitious live action version to life, and after Margot Robbie was initially considered, the leading role was given to Scarlett Johansson. As usual, the internet went into a fit at the casting of a white woman in an Asian role, especially after the fuss made over Cameron Crowe’s casting of Emma Stone as an Asian character in Aloha.
We’re straight-up betting that Ghost in the Shell will be a far better film as it follows a human-cyborg hybrid who leads a task force devoted to stopping criminals and extremists. Sounds like a film for our times. Rounding out the cast are Beat Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Kaori Momoi, Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo.
In this featurette, which shows some new footage from the film along with a bunch of behind the scenes action, Paramount Pictures have recruited Oshii to give the film his seal of approval, as well as thoughts from Sanders.
Ghost in the Shell is in cinemas March 30, 2017

Hey Filmink, Oshii isn’t the creator of Ghost in the Shell but instead the director of the anime adaptation. The creator is Masamune Shirow.
You’re right, we’ve amended it slightly, thank you!
