The Abba-riffic Aussie smash Muriel’s Wedding is being transformed into a blockbuster stage musical in 2017, with original writer and director, PJ Hogan, writing the book and original music by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. The show will make its debut on November 7 at the Roslyn Packer Theatre in Sydney.
Like the 1994 film, Muriel’s Wedding follows the titular dreamer (originally played by Toni Collette) as she struggles to overcome her small town limitations, dreaming that the perfect wedding will set her free from her awkward past. The musical version comes courtesy of Global Creatures Ltd and the Sydney Theatre Company, and will be directed by Simon Phillips, who successfully brought The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, to the stage.
