Ahead of the announcement of the full programme for the 19 – 28 January 2024 festival, FLiCKERFEST has revealed a number of gems that will be making their Australian/NSW premieres, if not world premieres.

Damien Walshe-Howling returns to the director’s chair for UNSPOKEN, which will world premiere at FLiCKERFEST. The film is set in 1979 and centres on a love affair between Croatian born Marina and an Australian man during a volatile time for the Croatian community. Other actors stepping behind the camera include Georgian Haig, whose comedic short ASHES stars Michael Caton. Milena Bennett’s CACTUS is a tender film about a young woman (Tiarnie Coupland) who develops a bittersweet relationship with her elderly Portuguese neighbour. Other Australian titles that have been revealed include Clare Hoey’s film SHOWPONY, based on her star Sophie Lowe’s real experiences of filming self-tapes; and COLDWATER, Jay and Shaun Perry’s touching drama about an elderly couple (Bruce Spence, Deborah Kennedy).

Three international titles have also been revealed, including the Australian premiere of Ricky Gervais’ SEVEN MINUTES, which is about … “A desolate train track seems the perfect spot to end it all, until someone else turns up with the same idea. Awkward”; the World Premiere of Mika Simmons’ MY WEEK WITH MAISY, which stars Joanna Lumley as a middle class Daily Mail reader who befriends a young child who wants to grow up to be a lesbian.

Last title announced so far is animation WAR IS OVER from Dave Mullins, who has a history with Pixar (co-directed Monsters Inc., etc). which features the original recording of the titular song by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, subtitled ‘(Happy Christmas)’, and is set in an alternate WWI reality.
