Back in 2007, director Louise Alston made her feature film debut All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane, a charming indie romcom starring Matt Zeremes, Charlotte Gregg, Ryan Johnson and Gyton Grantley, with a screenplay by FilmInk contributor Stephen Vagg, adapting his own play of the same name.
Almost 20 years later, Alston and Vagg team again (well, you know, they’re married, so it was bound to happen) with All My Friends Are Back in Brisbane, currently filming in Brisbane.
“It’s not a direct sequel to the original, but it takes place in the same universe and has a similar mixture of humour, romance and heart,” said Alston in a press release about the film, which like the original film is adapted from a Stephen Vagg written stageplay.
“All My Friends Are Back in Brisbane is about people returning to their hometown after having been away for a long time and finding what has and hasn’t changed. It explores what it means to confront lost love, old friends, and finding a place to settle. It’s a very Brisbane story but also a universal one.”
This time around, Cris (Nelle Lee) returns to Brisbane after being in London for a decade after being dumped by her fiancé, landing a job working with her ex-boyfriend Scooter (Andrew Steel, who also produces), who is now married with a child. Like the original, the sequel features some of Australia’s most exciting emerging acting talent in support, including Kym Jackson as Michelle, Cris’ best friend; Dan Ewing as Hutcho, an old school friend turned tycoon; Tim Ross as Aram, Michelle’s husband; Brooke Lee as Ainsley, Scooter’s wife; and Julian Curtis as Toby, Cris’ possible new love interest.
Watch out for All My Friends Are Back in Brisbane being filmed in the coming weeks in New Farm, West End and Brisbane’s CBD, and be sure to cheer on the making of indie Australian filmed content!
