“Curls is a playful, irreverent world where sexuality, self-discovery and satire collide,” promises Harriet McKern. “Making my first feature at 60 is incredibly special, and I feel very fortunate to be working with such a talented cast to create a whacky world of nonsensical gravitas.”

That cast includes Kate Skinner, Zoe Terakes, Rina Mousavi, Jonny Pasvolsky, Jillian Nguyen, Janine Burchett, Joseph Del Re, Peter Phelps and Osamah Sami.
Producing is Breathless Films’ Ulysses Oliver and Ben Ferris, alongside Rina Mousavi, with cinematography by Justine Kerrigan and Franc Biffone, Hair and Make-Up by Marisa Secerov, Production Design by Gabriela Loza, with Fran Tinley as Art Director and Carmen Galan as Costume Designer.
“Curls is a bold, playful and unapologetically female driven story that explores sexuality, identity and self-acceptance through an absurd and imaginative lens,” said producer/actor Rina Mousavi. “We’re thrilled to bring together such an incredible cast and creative team on this journey.”
“Like what Phoebe Waller-Bridge did with Fleabag, Harriet McKern draws on her extensive life experiences to lean into the flawed vulnerability of her characters, while constantly finding the comic and the absurd in the world that they live in,” said the Breathless Films team. “We were drawn to Harriet’s authentic voice and wry sense of humour, and we hope that audiences will be too!”
Curls is described as an absurd dramedy “that tackles sexuality and self-love with humour and heart.”
Isabel (Kate Skinner) is a forty-year-old literary editor looking for a relationship, reconnecting with her ex, who is a successful author, while “her personified libido (Zoe Terakes) goes AWOL to join a resistance army. The film is set in a contemporary semi-fictitious Australia run by a candy mogul president (Peter Phelps), who scapegoats “personified libidos”, among others, for the ills of society.”
Filming has been taking place across Sydney, and also a trip to Coffs Harbour’s Big Banana. No comment.
