Production of Back of the Net has begun in the Wollongong and Kiama area, with Disney Channel star Sofia Wylie (Andi Mack) in the lead as Cory Bailey, a young science fanatic who finds herself a fish out of water at the Harold Soccer Academy when she accidentally gets on the wrong bus.

Directed by Louise Alston (All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane, Jucy). The film also stars Gemma Chua-Tran, Trae Robin, Tiarnie Coupland, Raj Labade, Yasmin Honeychurch and Ashleigh Ross.

“I am so excited to be here in Australia,” Wylie said. “Working with such an incredible cast and crew. I am passionate about telling empowering stories for girls, and I can’t wait to share this story of friendship on the soccer field with audiences.”

This is the second project producer Steve Jaggi has brought to the Wollongong area –  Rip Tide, starring Debby Ryan, was also shot in the region in 2016. “It is terrific to be back shooting in beautiful Wollongong and Kiama,” said Jaggi. “We had a fantastic time filming here for Rip Tide, and didn’t hesitate to return for our latest project Back of the Net.”

Director Louise Alston added, “I am thrilled to be bringing this special story about female friendships to our young audience. Back of the Net will be a tween girlfriends’ date movie, incorporating themes of independence, resilience, teamwork and of course friendship. To be filming in this beautiful region of NSW is icing on the cake.”

Back of the Net will be released theatrically later this year by Umbrella Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand, and MarVista Entertainment internationally.
