After three years of presenting the best cinema the Asia Pacific region has to offer, the Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival [BAPFF] will no longer continue in its current form. The festival, an offshoot of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, will be replaced with a number of events throughout the year.
Filling the void left by the closure of the long-running Brisbane Film Festival, and with the support of the QLD government looking to position Brisbane as a gateway to Asia, BAPFF struggled to attract significant audiences with its foreign language arthouse programming, though it did change things up last year with a more accessible offering of films.
In a statement, festival organisers Brisbane Marketing said, “After careful consideration and engagement with industry and partners, a decision has been taken to discontinue the standalone film festival format of BAPFF and focus on a more accessible, year-round APSA screening program. APSA screenings and events will be held at festivals similar to the recent BrisAsia Festival and in partnership with like-minded events throughout the year.”
Several screenings and industry events are planned for the week of the Awards, which take place this year on November 23 at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre.
