Well, well, well … it seems that Angel Studios’ The King of Kings has been resurrected off the back of its enormous success in the US. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has opened reasonably well, but not with the same enthusiasm as the US.
The same success cannot be said for Australian film The Correspondent, which packed out preview Q&As and dominated media stories, but opened very softly on wide release. Pundits will have various excuses, the main one being that audience behaviour has changed, and people will wait until it’s available in the home. But the fact is that people are just not going to the movies in sustainable numbers anymore, not to the same ol’, same ol’, anyway, and A Minecraft Movie was a lifeline that cinemas desperately needed.
