Here’s a look at our picks for the top superhero movies of all time.
The Dark Knight
Was there really any doubt that this second Batman film directed by Christopher Nolan would be present on this list? It’s not only a great comic book adaptation, but it’s a great film full stop. Then again, with Heath Ledger and Christian Bale in central roles as the Joker and Batman respectively, it was bound to be a success. It also went on to receive the Best Supporting Actor award for Ledger, Best Sound Editing Oscar and multiple other awards to boot.
Black Panther
Say what you will of this movie, but the film was awarded Oscars for Best Original Music Score, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and the BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects. If you’ve never experienced Wakanda before, then Black Panther will certainly provide you with an exciting look at the world and its inhabitants. Many people saw the success of this film as a great moment for diversity as well. It even saw some bettors place wagers on it winning in various categories, which is something that can be done every year with the Oscars at sportsbooks. Logan
Hugh Jackman may have starred in a slew of X-Men films, but it’s this outing in Logan that really allowed him to shine. He went on to win the Empire Award for Best Actor, and it’s rightly deserved, too. Logan tells the story of a dying warrior’s final mission of redemption, and it portrays Wolverine in stark contrast to his X-Men figure. It’s violent, humorous, sombre and everything you could want in a superhero film.
Superman II
If you think anyone has portrayed Superman better than Christopher Reeve, we beg you to take a look at Superman II from 1980. In the film, Superman agrees to sacrifice his powers so that he can enter into a relationship with Lois Lane. However, three Kryptonian criminals have also been released and are destroying parts of planet Earth. Check out the Richard Donner Cut of the film, because this really proves why Superman II is one of the best superhero movies of all time.
X-Men: Days of Future Past
A plethora of X-Men movies have been released, and with a lot of them, they try to cram in too many characters, with very few of them getting enough time to really develop. Days of Future Past manages to combine some of the best elements of the series though, presenting a very satisfying outing. Basically, the ultimate collection of X-Men unite to fight a war for the survival of the species across two time periods. Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Wolverine, with various other returns from James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Jennifer Lawrence. The film also went on to win the Empire Award for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film in 2015.
