Streaming service Dendy Direct continue their practice of anointing a noted Australian film figure with curatorial powers each month, this time tapping Jennifer Kent, director of the absolutely fantastic horror flick The Babadook, to tell us what we should be watching.

Kent has selected an interesting, genre-spanning range of cinematic treats, saying of her choices, “The films I love the most have unique worlds and independent visions. In these days of Marvel universes and billion dollars franchises, it’s harder and harder to make a truly independent film. Hats off to the films below that are engaging, thought provoking, moving (sometimes funny) and above all, helmed by a director with a unique voice. Warning, they’re mostly a little bit dark!”

Shocker right there.

Kent’s picks include:

Amour
Ed Wood
Nebraska
Shame
Snowtown
Son of Saul
Three Colours Blue
The White Ribbon
The Act of Killing
The Master
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Death of Mister Lazarescu
Train to Busan
Wake In Fright

Two Michael Haneke films – that is dark! And Australia gets a good showing, with Wake in Fright, Shame, and Snowtown getting a look-in. And, of course, The Babadook is available as well, but Kent is way too classy to list her own film. Check out her picks here.
