How has it been working with Gal Gadot on Justice League? “I love Gal!”

What do you think about Wonder Woman? And also, do you have many new fans because of the DC movies? “I do know that more young men recognise me now, which must be confusing to them, because in my own life, I don’t wear any makeup, and I walk around not looking very ‘Lois Laney’ at all. But Gal is fantastic! And she’s a wonderful, wonderful woman, and I really can’t wait for Wonder Woman. It looks awesome! And she looks awesome in it, and I really can’t wait!”

What about Justice League? How has that been? “Yeah. It’s one of those films where, gosh, I can’t even talk about it, because if I tell you anything about it, then I have to kill myself, and not you.”

You can always deny it. “Yeah, I’m going to deny everything! But it was really fun to see everybody on set, running around in their costumes, and the footage that they showed at Comic-Con was really fun. It’s a good group.”

You play a linguist in Arrival…did [Israel-born] Gal Gadot try to teach you Hebrew? “No, but we’re saving that! I had to learn Mandarin for Arrival – well, just four sentences – and it nearly killed me. It literally was the hardest thing I’ve ever done as an actress. To try to act, while speaking Mandarin, and trying to memorise the lines, made me realise that two weeks was really not enough time. I got two weeks to learn four lines. ‘That’s fine!’ ‘No, it was not fine!’ I was really stressed out, and I ended up taping things, so I could phonetically break it down. It was tricky.”

Next to Gal, you are very short. “I know. Well, on that whole set, I’m like trying to play Lois Lane, and I’m supposed to be tough, and I’m like, ‘Hey, seriously.’ They actually have to build things, so I can look people in the eye!”

Arrival and Nocturnal Animals are in cinemas now. Justice League will be released on November 17, 2017. Click through for our interviews with Amy Adams for Arrival and Nocturnal Animals.
