Supporting dozens of local composers, Melodie stands at the forefront of Australia’s creative technology sector. With a commitment to supporting a thriving creative economy, nurturing local talent and providing innovative solutions for the broadcast industry, Melodie continues to amplify Australian music on both the local and international stage.

Melodie‘s Founder, Evan Buist, said “Australia is brimming with innovators in the creative technology sector. This award is a reminder that the world is paying attention and buying the product. You’ve heard of Canva and Atlassian, and now you’ve heard of Melodie: an Australian-owned music company representing a huge roster of Australian composers, operating in a less visible but increasingly lucrative corner of the global entertainment industry. We’re playing our part, pushing Australia closer to becoming a net exporter of music, and helping to deliver benefits and grow the ecosystem and sustainability of Australian creative industries.

“Australia has a growing number of ‘unknown’ composers and independent artists. You may not know their names, but they are producing the lion’s share of the music you hear in film and television programs. They are an important part of Australia’s creative ecosystem, contributing to our export media market, creating significant cultural value, and maintaining a vibrant industry for future generations of artists.”

The avenues for exporting Australian music are also evolving, and not necessarily represented by the usual suspects, nor via traditional distribution channels. For instance, Melodie’s establishment of a global partnership and API integration into NYSE listed GoDaddy Studio, means thousands of music tracks by dozens of Australian artists are now available to millions of creators worldwide. Deals like this exponentially expand Australia’s musical and cultural footprint in a way that generates significant export revenue for local artists.

Australian Music for Australian Content

However, unlike mangoes, wine or Ugg boots – music doesn’t come with an Australian Made badge. For television producers, advertisers and brands, making the deliberate choice to use music from local artists is not always front of mind.

In 2021, Australian artist Jack River called on Channel 7 to incorporate more Australian music in their coverage of the Tokyo Olympics. “We wanna be your soundtrack”, she wrote. This ignited the conversation around why our sports-loving country was not playing music by Australian artists during the coverage of the Olympics, and in general. It was a watershed moment for the local music industry: Australian music should be used to tell Australian stories.

Now the tide is turning for the Australian music industry, and Australian-composed music is showing up in new places. Since launching only 6 years ago, Melodie, has seen 20 million minutes of their artists music broadcast on Australian free-to-air television and VOD platforms in shows like Australian Ninja Warrior, Four Corners, Deadly Women, The Amazing Race and Territory Cops.

With more than half of Melodie’s composers being Australian, paired with a world-first music search technology feature allowing users to “show Australian artists only”, Aussie music is in increasingly high rotation on our screens.

It’s a communal effort to move the needle, and Australia’s creative workforce are paying attention. 2024 has already offered a blitz of top calibre Australian productions featuring Australian music, including TV shows like Take Me Home (Channel 9), Renovate or Rebuild (Channel 9), Good Chef Bad Chef (Channel 10), Roads Less Travelled (Network 10) and Dance Life (Prime Video AU & NZ), all featuring Melodie music. In fact, the soundtrack to Creative Australia’s own launch video featured Melodie track, ‘Didge Beats’, by renowned First Nations artist, Nooky.

Melodie Founder, Evan Buist, said “We’re empowering artists to do what they do best: make great music. Every time a piece of music is downloaded at Melodie, an artist gets paid. We’re creating income for countless Australian musicians, in a way that places value on their creativity and acknowledges the arts as an income generating industry. Australia punches way beyond its weight when it comes to creativity. As Melodie’s award for “Product of the Year” at this year’s NAB Show depicts – the world is listening, and the soundtrack for 2024 is undoubtedly Australian,” Evan Buist added.
