This year’s festival will present 4 features, including Episodes 1 & 2 from Warwick Thornton & Brendan Fletcher’s desert-bound vampire series Firebite, Molly Reynolds’ My Name is Gulpilil – a profound documentary about the extraordinary life of one of Australia’s most treasured talents, John Harvey & Rhian Skirving’s Off Country – following six indigenous students transitioning from their homes into one of Australia’s most elite boarding schools, and Philippa Bateman’s musically-charged Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow, which celebrates the inspiring journey of singer-songwriters Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter during their iconic concert that premiered in 2004. There is also a First Nations short film strand featuring award winning short films Finding Jedda, Jarli and Tooly.
The live Q&A sessions after each film feature industry professionals and prominent First Nations voices, including Rachael McPhail (Founder, Places Names in Addresses), John Harvey (Director), Shona Reid (Executive Director Reconciliation SA) and Tanith Glynn-Maloney (Filmmaker) and the incredible Shelley Ware (Renowned Television and Radio presenter) as this year’s moderator along with Actor, broadcaster, comedian and musician James Williams.
“Through the stories of the young Indigenous people in the Off Country, we can see how the colonial policies of the past are affecting our young people today,” said filmmaker John Harvey “We cannot ignore the impact these policies have had if we want to create a better future for Indigenous Australians.”
“I’m excited to be moderating VIFF again this year with Shelley,” says actor James Williams. “This film festival has fast become an important feature during Reconciliation Week. VIFF always programs brilliant stories that make Australia think about the history of this country, and why Reconciliation is important. The post screening Q&As are such a great opportunity for everyone to join the discussion, regardless of location, and talk about some important issues.”
Tickets for the individual virtual screening events are $7.99USD with an All Access Festival Pass available for $19.99USD.
