Guillermo del Toro’s horror-tinged love story The Shape of Water has racked up an impressive 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director – the most nominations in a year with an unusually high number of nominations for genre films in the prestige categories.
The other notable genre title is Jordan Peele’s low-budget, highly acclaimed horror film, Get Out, with showings in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. The grim superhero coda Logan picked up a Best Adapted Screenplay nod, leaving the likes of The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049 to scrap it out in the technical categories (surely, though, this is cinematographer Roger Deakins’ year).
Peele isn’t the only debut director to get a nomination, with Greta Gerwig picking one up for the sublime Lady Bird – the only female director to do so. Notably, both Wonder Woman and Detroit scored zero nominations this year, with Patty Jenkins’ superhero film noticeably absent even from the tech categories.
Meanwhile, the other strong contender is Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri, whose clutch of seven nominations includes acting nods for Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell.
It’s a somewhat quiet year for Australian talent, too, although Margot Robbie’s Best Actress nom for I, Tonya is welcome if expected, and it’s great to see Derin Seale and Josh Lawson’s The Eleven O’Clock up for Best Short. Australia also notched up two nominations in Editing: Paul Machliss for Baby Driver and Lee Smith for Dunkirk.
