Netflix today announced the beginning of downloadable content for all its subscribers worldwide, enabling users to save programs for viewing when offline. The function is available via an update to the Netflix app on iOS and Android.
Initially, only some of Netflix’s content offerings will be available to download, including the hugely popular Orange is the New Black and royal-themed drama, The Crown, but the range is expected to expand rapidly.
This is certainly good news for Australian viewers, who often have to contend with patchy internet service and slow speeds since the NBN turned into a never-ending debacle.
The only real caveat at this point is that you can only download to tablet or mobile devices at this point, so no loading your PC’s hard drive with hundreds of hours of content – the download function is clearly meant to augment streaming, not replace it.
