The documentary explores the irreverent world of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and their legendary Easter in the Park celebration
Tigerlily Pictures’ feature-length documentary, Hunky Jesus, is set to screen at the Sydney Queer Screen Film Festival on 6 September 2026 in Australia. Sydney’s longstanding Queer Screen has been showcasing new voices within international LGBTIQ+ cinema for over 30 years.
The film takes audiences inside San Francisco’s annual Easter in the Park celebration, hosted by the legendary Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – an order of queer and trans nuns who have spent more than four decades blending drag, performance, activism and irreverent humour to fight for social justice and equality.
Hosted by the illustrious Sister Roma and RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Honey Mahogany, Hunky Jesus captures the colourful and playful spirit of the Sisters, as they subvert expectations and challenge traditional ideas around religion, identity and self-expression. At its heart is a message of ‘radical joy’: celebrating the freedom to express yourself while challenging the systems and prejudices that seek to restrict it.
The film’s playful approach extends beyond its live-action footage, with an opening animation sequence inspired by the wicked collage style of Monty Python and narrated by actor and LGBTQIA+ icon George Takei.
Hunky Jesus is brought to life by an award-winning creative team, including director Jennifer M. Kroot (To Be Takei, The Untold Story of Armistead Maupin), producer Brian Benson (Dolores), Spirit Award-winning producer Gerry Kim (I’m No Longer Here), and producer Christine Yoo (26.2 to Life). The original score is composed by Michael Hearst (Magic Camp, Chicken People), with editing by Bill Weber (We Were Here, To Be Takei). Jennifer Kroot, Director of Hunky Jesus, says: “Hunky Jesus is about radical joy, building a community, finding your people and celebrating who you are, even in the face of adversity. The Sisters have built something incredibly powerful over the past four decades, and it couldn’t be more fulfilling to see their story to reach audiences in new continents and for the gospel to now spread in both Australia and Portugal.”
Hunky Jesus screens at the Sydney Queer Screen Film Festival on 6th September 2026 at 2 PM at Event Cinemas, George St. Tickets are now on sale.
