The beloved Oscar-nominated Argentine comedy-drama that captured hearts worldwide comes to Lido Cinemas as part of Melbourne Filmoteca’s landmark 26th season.

Melbourne Filmoteca presents Son of the Bride (El Hijo de la Novia), a film that has lost none of its warmth, wit or emotional punch since its release, and remains one of the finest comedies to come out of Latin America.

Directed by Juan José Campanella and starring Ricardo Darín, Héctor Alterio and Norma Aleandro, Son of the Bride is the story of Rafael Belvedere, a workaholic Buenos Aires restaurateur in the grip of a midlife crisis who has let everything that matters slip through his fingers: his marriage, his relationship with his daughter, his oldest friendships, and his ageing parents. When his father Nino, after 44 years of marriage, announces he wants to give his wife Norma, who is living with Alzheimer’s, the church wedding she always dreamed of, Rafael is forced to take stock of the life he has been too busy to actually live.

Reuniting Héctor Alterio and Norma Aleandro seventeen years after their collaboration on the 1984 Oscar-winning The Official Story, the film crackles with chemistry, heart and an effortlessly funny script.

It is the kind of film that reminds you what cinema does best, making you laugh, making you ache, and sending you home wanting to call someone you love.

The film earned 37 wins across various festivals and national awards and drew nearly 1.7 million admissions in Argentina alone — a remarkable achievement for a domestic release. For director Campanella, it was the beginning of an extraordinary run that would culminate in The Secret in Their Eyes (2009), winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
