However, not all film adaptations live up to their original video game material. A common theme with video game movies is that sometimes they don’t turn out as well as we hoped. Where some movies are praised for their adaptation, there are some that only vaguely reference the games and miss out important plot and game features.
Over the years there have been many popular games released on Playstation, Xbox, and PC. There have also been many films that have inspired other games like film-themed slot games and board games. If you’re looking for a film that’s just as good as your favourite video games, then take a look at these exciting movie suggestions.
Silent Hill (2006)
For those who want to experience a thrilling horror film, then Silent Hill is one to watch. Starring Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean, this chilling film grossed around $100m at the box office. The first Silent Hill video game, released in 1999 on PlayStation, is thought to be one of the best survival horror games to play. Even though this film was loosely based on the game, the film was praised for its great set designs and visuals.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Over the years there have been many comic books that have been turned into movies and video games. One of the most popular superheroes we see on the big screen is Batman. In the 2008 film The Dark Knight we see Batman/Bruce Wayne come face-to-face with The Joker who is busy causing chaos in Gotham City. Though not based on the movie, film fans who want to see Batman face The Joker in gameplay can do so with Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Although its sequel wasn’t as successful, these films nevertheless showcase great performances from Angelina Jolie.
Resident Evil (2002)
Another long-standing film series based on a video game is the Resident Evil franchise. This game inspired many movies including Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). However, the first film in the franchise is praised as being the one that best references the original video game. This film features Milla Jovovich as Alice, battling the evil Umbrella Corporation to contain a deadly virus outbreak. For video game fans, it was announced earlier in July that the Resident Evil 5 and 6 games would also be released on the Nintendo Switch.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019)
Released earlier this year, Pokémon Detective Pikachu has been praised for its Pokémon visuals and for Ryan Reynolds’ performance as Pikachu. The popular video game series has been running since 1996 with the release of the first games Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.
