We can put that old chestnut about whether Jack Palance accidentally read out Marisa Tomei’s name to bed now – we’ve got bigger fish to fry. And they don’t come much bigger than Hollywood royalty Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway accidentally (albeit briefly) giving the Best Picture Oscar to La La Land over the actual winner, Moonlight.

Apparently, the card naming the winner for Best Actress – Emma Stone for La La Land – was in the envelope that Beatty opened, and both he and Dunaway made the understandable assumption that the LA-set musical had taken the top honour.

The mistake was soon corrected and a visibly stunned Barry Jenkins, director of Moonlight, took to the stage. “All you people out there who feel like there’s no mirror for you, that your life is not reflected, the Academy has your back, the ACLU has your back, we have your back and for the next four years we will not leave you alone, we will not forget you,” he said, echoing similar sentiments about diversity, identity and representation to those spoken by Viola Davis when she won Best Supporting Actress earlier in the evening for her work in Fences.

La La Land, the strong favourite for Best Picture, still did quite well, with 32-year-old director Damian Chazelle becoming the youngest ever Best Director recipient and, as mentioned above, Emma Stone winning Best Actress. The film also took home Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Song.
