Following its strong performance at the US box office, Beauty and the Beast has repeated it down under jumping straight to the top spot in its opening weekend. In fact, four new releases have usurped long-stayers Kong and Logan, though both continued strongly in their third and fourth week of release respectively.
Lion has seemingly done its dash, so it should be interesting to see what happens in a few weeks’ time when the extended edition is released in cinemas. And when you look at Jasper Jones just below it, and losing momentum every day, it must ultimately be deemed a disappointment, even though compared to past years in Australian film, a success.
On limited release, The Salesman has obviously benefited from its Oscar win, whilst Their Finest has started strongly, and with Bill Nighy’s promo tour, it may turn out to be a breakout hit upon wider release. And if it wasn’t obvious already, the market for Indian films is booming!
