Though classics like Mean Girls and The Notebook are always a safe bet, we thought it would be nice to expand your palate. So, we broke down the top five comedy chick flicks you should watch on your chill girls’ movie night!
Ticket to Paradise (2022)
We’re starting our list with a hot new release! Ticket to Paradise stars the queen of romantic comedies, Julia Roberts, alongside the legendary George Clooney. The two actors play a divorced couple who learned their daughter plans to marry a local Bali islander. Though they have their differences, they team up and take a trip to the exotic island in an attempt to stop the wedding. Fans of 2000s romcoms have high expectations for this movie, which already has a 6.1 rating on IMDB. So, grab your girlfriends, some buttered popcorn, and go to a showing in the cinema near you.
What Happens in Vegas (2008)
Las Vegas revenue statistics show that the strip’s wedding industry is worth $2 billion, and about 340 couples marry there daily. Well, this statistic might be the inspiration behind the 2008 iconic romcom What Happens in Vegas. Starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher in the main roles, this movie revolves around a career woman and playboy that get married during a drunken night in Sin City. As if the marriage wasn’t enough, Jack wins a massive jackpot with Joy’s quarter, sticking them with a huge amount of money they must divide between each other. The rest of the movie then follows both characters and their elaborate schemes of trying to undermine each other so they can get the money. Of course, they inevitably fall for each other along the way, resulting in a hilarious and heartwarming happy ending.
Legally Blonde (2001)
This film stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, the blonde, not-conventionally-smart sorority girl that has it all. Well, everything except a proposal from her boyfriend. In an attempt to prove she’s capable of being a great wife to a successful politician, she enrolls in Harvard Law School. She quickly finds that her personality isn’t exactly a great fit with her new environment, but she manages to get the hang of things. And yes, she does have a romantic interest, but the movie doesn’t center around him or their relationship. As the storyline develops, Elle deals with additional hardships until she ultimately saves the day at a court trial.
Monster-in-Law (2005)
This 2005 comedy stars Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda as Charlie and her soon-to-be mother-in-law, Viola. The movie starts as your typical romantic comedy, with a meet-cute involving many adorable dogs and a shirtless doctor. However, the movie’s actual plot starts once Viola meets her son’s fiancée and immediately disapproves of her. She puts in motion several schemes in an attempt to break off their wedding, including causing Charlie to have an extreme allergic reaction. However, Charlie catches along with Viola’s plan and retaliates several times. The back-and-forth fights eventually lead to a happy ending where both women manage to find common ground, and the happy couple drives off into the sunset. Though Lopez’s acting can leave something to be desired at times, this movie is a true comical treasure you shouldn’t miss out on!
Sex and the City (2008)
Lastly, you can’t go wrong at a girls’ night with the best chick flick of all time – Sex and the City. The movie came as a follow-up to the legendary HBO show, which ended just a few years prior to its release. Of course, it stars the same fabulous foursome, this time featuring Carrie’s wedding to the notorious Mr. Big. Things don’t go as planned, and the four friends take a road trip to an exotic location, providing many funny moments. We won’t tell you more than that, as there’s no point in spoiling the rest of the movie. The best part is, once you finish the two-hour-long film, there’s a sequel you can enjoy!
Final Thoughts
Yes, most of these picks are retro and cheesy. But that’s the secret recipe for a chill and comfy girl’s night. If you prefer other genres, you can always go for adrenaline-boosting shark movies or stand-alone superhero releases. Finally, if you decide to scream and jump with a scary movie, you can check out the range of Jordan Peele’s newest horror movies or give the latest (and last) Halloween title a spin.
