For an industry (unofficially named ‘Bollywood’) that produces films at a rate higher than any other, shockingly little is known about Indian cinema.

Although the high-octane action sequences and heart-melting romantic stories remain prevalent in Bollywood even today, the unique creativity in storytelling runs deeper than any surface-level stereotype.

With 1500-2000 films produced each year in over 20 languages, you must be ground-breaking to stand out.

Welcome to This Week in Bollywood.

Releasing June 9

MAURH (Mindblowing) | Punjabi

Maurh is based on the long-standing legend of brothers Jeona Maurh and Krishna Maurh, who stood as beacons of hope during the British colonisation in the late 1800s.

The story, which originates from the northern Indian state of Punjab, stars popular Punjabi singer and actor Ammy Virk (Qismat) alongside Dev Kharoud (Dakuan da Munda).

Punjab is known for its long history of warriors and brave martyrs who fought against British rule. Maurh will give audiences a small yet powerful insight into this long and brutal history.

VIMANAM (Zee Studios) | Telegu

Vimanam is the heart-warming story of a father’s endless pursuit to make his son’s biggest dream of traveling on a flight come true.

With a sure-to-be endearing performance by the film’s young lead (Dhruvan) and an expertly nuanced performance by veteran actor and director Samuthirakani (RRR), this is a great option to watch with the whole family.

TAKKAR (Southern Star) | Tamil

If classic Indian cinema is what you are looking for, look no further than Takkar.

The film follows a young and dynamic boy who has the urge to mint money. His plan is foiled when he meets a girl, who believes money is the cause of all distress to life.

Packed full of physics-defying action sequences and a complicated romance, this film will keep your heart pumping.

UNSTOPPABLE (Southern Star) | Telegu

Unstoppable is a drama-comedy that explores the consequences of mixing guns, drugs, and money.

It will keep you laughing with its slapstick comedy style and over the top action sequences. But what will get you humming for the rest of the week are the catchy songs!

Sydney Film Festival’s Bachchan Retrospective

Sydney Film Festival will be running an Amitabh Bachchan retrospective for fans of cinema to indulge in one of the most iconic eras of Bollywood.

The four films in the retrospective will give insight into the foundations of Bollywood as we know it today.

Those acquainted with Mr. Bachchan will be well aware of the films. However, for anyone who is new to this world, go to the SFF website for all details and trailers. We’ve added one below to give you a little taste!
