Being sent down to the minors may be the best thing to happen to M. Night Shyamalan; his last film via low budget genre specialists Blumhouse was the well-received The Visit, and now Split looks it could be a good couple of hours of schlocky thrills and chills.

Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) is the plucky teen kidnapped and held against her will along with two other young women. James McAvoy is their abductor, a man sporting 23 discrete personalities. The cinematic influences are clear, but if Shyamalan manages to mix them in an interesting way, Split could well be a worthy little thriller. Here’s hoping.

Split hits Australian cinemas on January 19, 2017.
