Could this really be the end of the long-running and largely nonsensical action-horror series?

It’s been fourteen years since Milla Jovovich first capped a zombie in 2002’s Resident Evil, continuing on through Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), and Retribution (2012) until we finally come to The Final Chapter of what is – and this may be damning with faint praise – the most successful video-game-to-film-adaptation of all time.

This time around Jovovich’s Alice returns to Raccoon City, setting of the first film, for her final showdown with the villainous Umbrella Corporation. Ali Larter, Shawn Roberts, Ruby Rose and Iain Glenn are also along for the ride.

The Final Chapter is directed by Paul WS Anderson, who not only helmed the original installment, but put a ring on his leading lady shortly thereafter. As Jovovich observed, “This whole experience has been such a huge part of my life, not even just as an actor but on a personal level. My husband I met through this, two kids. It’s the family that evil built… literally.”

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is out on January 26, 2017.
