Screen Careers, in partnership with Montague Production Services, is calling on Western Australian tradespeople and workers with practical skills to apply for Trade to Set: Unit — a hands-on, free workshop designed to fast-track entry into the film and television industry.

The program, supported by Screenwest and the Government of Western Australia, is looking for a small group of up to eight participants with transferable trade skills — people who are mechanically minded, comfortable with vehicles and equipment, and ready to work in a fast-paced environment. Experience working in the screen industry is desired but not essential.

Successful applicants will complete a two-day intensive workshop in Perth, covering how film sets operate, what entry-level Unit department roles involve, and a full hands-on day at the Montague Production Hub — getting familiar with the trucks, trailers, generators and equipment used on real WA productions.

A panel of working WA Unit professionals will share their experiences and take part in a networking session with participants.

The Unit department is one of the most physically demanding and logistically complex departments on any production — responsible for transport, equipment, basecamp and the day-to-day infrastructure that keeps a shoot moving. It’s also one of the clearest entry points into the industry for people coming from trade and operational backgrounds.

“This program is for people who are good with their hands, reliable under pressure, and ready to learn a new industry,” says Esther Coleman, CEO of Screen Careers. “If you can drive a truck, tow a trailer, or manage logistics on a busy site, you already have skills the film screen industry needs.”

The workshop will be run August 22nd-23rd, 2026 in Perth. Applicants must be current residents of Western Australia. Applications are open now and close Monday, July 6th at 12pm AWST

How to apply

Applications are made via the Screen Careers online form. Applicants can also submit a short video in place of written answers to the skills and background questions.
