The Very Short Film Festival (VSFF) is thrilled to announce its Premiere Screening Event scheduled for 31 May 2024 at the iconic State Cinema in Hobart, Tasmania. This event stands as a unique celebration of Australian storytelling, featuring a film competition dedicated to Australian filmmakers.

With a focus on very short films within a 5 minute format, the festival encourages widespread participation. This year’s signature theme, ‘Spark’, is set to ignite the creativity of filmmakers, leaving the interpretation of the theme open to their imaginative visions.

The 4th annual Very Short Film Festival will be inaugurated by Hobart’s Lord Mayor, Cr Anna Reynolds, and feature an exclusive screening of the top ten finalists’ films. To extend the festival’s reach, the screening will also be livestreamed, allowing audiences across Australia to experience the unveiling of these exceptional films. Industry legends and VSFF ambassadors, such as Justin Kurzel and Leah Purcell, will be in attendance, offering aspiring filmmakers an opportunity to network with Australia’s leading industry figures. We are also excited to welcome other distinguished members of our judging panel, including our newest addition, the remarkable film producer and media entrepreneur Deanne Weir, alongside the beloved Australian actor Essie Davis. The event will also feature live music and an afterparty featuring local food and drinks, hosted by Matilda Boseley from the Guardian Australia.

The competition features two entry categories: Junior for school-aged participants, and Open for all other entrants. The evening will see winners awarded in each category, plus an audience award presented by Justin Kurzel. Finalists will enjoy mentorship opportunities, an all-inclusive trip to the festival premiere in Tasmania, and cash prizes.

In tribute to artistic legacy, the festival’s trophies, “the Dorothies,” honour Tasmanian artist Dorothy Duncombe-Jackson. This year, Melbourne ceramicist Stephanie Williams will handcraft each trophy, with each one telling a story in itself.

Tickets are now on sale and include a complimentary welcome drink. This event promises not only to be an unforgettable celebration of film, showcasing diverse Australian voices and stories but also a gathering for festivity and community celebration.
