Organisers are looking for short and feature length films that tell a great story and entertain. Filmmakers have the chance to win some great prizes with over $10,000 to give away in cash and prizes. The SSFF is the premier festival of the western suburbs and an international festival that attracts entries from around the world. It is part of the City of Maribyrnong’s prestigious Festival City calendar and it’s eight day program makes it one of the largest short film festivals in Melbourne.

In addition to its diverse short film program, the 2022 festival will screen a youth program, a female filmmakers’ program, premier a Victorian made feature film, and present a selection of films from the Athens International Short Film Festival.

The SSFF was a ground-breaking festival from its inception. While many of Melbourne’s festivals now promote onscreen cultural diversity, the SSFF was designed from the beginning with innovative programs and awards designed to showcase the reality of the West’s vibrantly diverse society. Remarkably, it was the first festival in Australia, to have a female filmmakers’ program.

The 2022 festival will again be a hybrid festival but after two online festivals, due to Covid restrictions, organisers are hopeful they will be able to present some physical sessions in 2022.

“We’ve missed seeing the filmmakers on Opening Night. We’re looking forward to seeing them again and being able to socialise and enjoy watching films together,” says Festival Director Anna Bourozikas.

Anyone can enter the festival which accepts films from all genres. Entries close 31st January 2022.
