Ninja Scroll returns to ANZ cinemas this October in 4K

Sugoi Co brings Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s landmark 1993 film back to ANZ screens for the first time in a digitally restored 4K presentation.

Ninja Scroll, Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s landmark 1993 anime, returns to cinemas across Australia and New Zealand from 8 October 2026 for a strictly limited season. Tickets go on sale from 10 September. All screenings will be in Japanese with English subtitles.

One of anime’s defining works, Ninja Scroll is a visceral, beautifully crafted action film set in Japan’s Edo period, and it shaped an entire generation of fans and filmmakers. More than three decades after its original release, ANZ audiences can now experience it as it was meant to be seen: on the big screen, in a pristine 4K digital restoration sourced from the original 35mm negative.

The restoration was produced by Sentai, the film’s US rights holder, under the supervision of director Yoshiaki Kawajiri. A full 4K scan (3840 × 2160) of the original camera negative, meticulous damage repair and professional colour correction combined to create an archival-quality digital master. The restored film world-premiered at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

SYNOPSIS

When Jubei saves a young ninja woman from the unthinkable, he assumes that’s the end of it. To his surprise, it’s only just the beginning. Together, the two investigate the mysterious deaths of an entire village which uncovers a conspiracy of demonic proportions! Getting closer to the truth, the demonic forces will stop at nothing to silence Jubei and his companion for good!
