Synopsis:
Forced to take refuge in her family’s old coffee shop during a sudden Covid-19 lockdown, Bonnie is shocked to discover that it is haunted by ghosts of her deceased relatives returning for the Hungry Ghost Festival.
The dead and the living are connected through their stomachs in We Jun Cho’s heartwarming, food-centric dramedy, Hungry Ghost Diner, set among the Malaysian Chinese community during the weeks preceding the Hungry Ghost Festival.
About the Film:
Director Cho We Jun drew inspiration for Hungry Ghost Diner from a deeply personal experience attending his grandmother’s funeral in Slim River, Perak. As a self-described “city boy” who rarely visited his relatives, Cho felt like an outsider in his own family. However, the funeral was an eye-opening experience that allowed him to reconnect with his roots and understand the value of family bonds. This realisation became the foundation for his debut feature film.
