For My Mother, a new short drama is set to debut next year – made by Attic Films in association with Sugarland Productions.
On the way to a school recital, a mother and son get into a volatile argument that unveils the vast space between them. For My Mother explores themes of parenthood, relationships, and love through a unique lens. It delves into the dynamics between two different people and examines their communication, both constructive and destructive.
Director, Writer, Producer Marc Vecchio said of the film: “The purpose of this film is to explore a deeply personal and complex mother-son relationship in which both parties love each other in certain ways but struggle to understand one another. Their love is conditional and perfectionistic, highlighting the unrealistic nature of such expectations. This film delves into how we attempt to connect with our loved ones, even when we are so different yet so similar. I wanted to portray two flawed characters that reflect how easily dysfunction can be perpetuated. At its core, “For My Mother” is about the complexities of love and the unconventional forms it can take.”
The film stars Jane Hall (Wentworth, Newton’s Law, Neighbours, Peacock’s Apple Never Falls, Frayed, Bluey) as The Mother, with The Son being played by Darcy Bryce (Hacksaw Ridge, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Jack Irish, New Gold Mountain).
The film is produced by Vessela Karadjova, Riley Sugars and Vecchio, with Executive Producing by Brock Dunstan. Cinematography is by Jesse Lane, with Production Design by Tiffany Dias and Costume Design by Coral Jamieson.
Riley Sugars said of the film: “I was immediately drawn to Marc’s deep cinematic knowledge and wide range of influences for this project. I loved the script, and when we met to discuss it, I was struck by his quiet passion for bringing the film to life. Marc was open and honest about his inspirations, and it was clear that he had carefully selected cinematic touchstones he wanted to reference. The project took a long time to get off the ground, and much credit goes to the incredible efforts of Vessela Karadjova and Marc Vecchio. Although the shoot was shorter than ideal, I’m incredibly proud of the film we’ve made and the explosive chemistry between our brilliant leads, Jane Hall and Darcy Bryce. I can’t wait for people to see it in 2025.”
