Australia has emerged as a box office powerhouse for IMAX with IMAX Australia generating over AUD $18.6 million in box office revenue in 2025, the highest-grossing year ever for the brand locally, and ranked among IMAX’s Top 15 global markets.

IMAX more than doubled its Australian network in 2025, opening six new locations across Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, with most launching ahead of the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The company now operates ten IMAX locations nationwide, with at least two more set to open later this year.

Avatar: Fire and Ash has grossed more than AUD $5 million in IMAX Australia to date, delivering a Top 10 opening weekend and becoming the second-highest grossing IMAX title of all time in the country. Australia currently ranks as the #10 global market for the film by box office, with IMAX Sydney and IMAX Melbourne standing as the #3 and #5 highest-grossing IMAX locations worldwide for the title.

Giovanni Dolci, Global Chief Commercial Officer for IMAX, said the record results showed the company’s rapid expansion plans for Australia, set in late 2023 with the re-opening of the iconic Sydney IMAX, were paying off.

Australia has become one of IMAX’s most exciting growth markets anywhere in the world,” said Dolci. “The scale of audience demand we saw in 2025 validates our long-term growth strategy and gives us real confidence as we continue expanding our footprint in 2026.

IMAX’s Australian momentum mirrors a standout global performance. In 2025, IMAX delivered USD $1.28 billion in global box office, the highest in Company history, growing 40% year-on-year and surpassing its pre-pandemic record.

IMAX continues to outperform the broader box office recovery because audiences are seeking premium, event-driven cinema experiences,” Dolci said. “Australia exemplifies that trend, and we expect this market to play an even bigger role in our global growth story in 2026 and beyond.

IMAX has guided to a record USD $1.4 billion in global box office for 2026, driven by an upcoming slate including Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, The Odyssey, Narnia and Dune: Part Three.
