IMAX is accelerating its rapid Australian expansion after reporting record third quarter revenue quarter globally and its second best Q3 ever in Australian.
IMAX reported third quarter 2025 Australian box office of $3.4 million, its highest grossing quarter since Q2 2015 and its second best Q3 ever.
The results underline IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond’s IMAX plan to open as many as 40 IMAX theatres across Australia, include its second screen in Perth, at Event Cinemas Innaloo in Perth, which it announced this week.
IMAX will have 10 screens operational across Australia in time for the much-anticipated December release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which features in a strong Q4 slate that includes Wicked: For Good, Zootopia 2, The Running Man, and Predator: Badlands.
In October 2023, IMAX had just one theatre in Australia, in Melbourne, prior to the reopening of the iconic Sydney IMAX in that month. By the end of this year, it will have its biggest footprint ever in the country. It will have opened six new IMAX locations in 2025 – 4 with HOYTS, 1 with Dendy Cinemas and 1 with EVT (Event Cinemas) – more than doubling its local network to 10.
As of the end of Q3 2025, IMAX has already earned over US$8.3 million in box office in Australia, on track to exceed last year’s record full-year result (US$9.1m in 2024, and its best year since 2015).
