On Friday June 10 (6.50pm) and Sunday June 12 (3.45pm), Cinema Nova will be screening the Ukrainian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, Oles Sanin’s THE GUIDE, in a special movie fundraiser event. 100% of box office proceeds from the film will be donated to Red Cross International and directed to Ukrainian Relief. THE GUIDE follows young American boy, Peter, and blind musician, Ivan, who are thrown together by fate during the Soviet regime’s subjugation of Ukraine in the 1930s.

MEET THE FILMMAKERS BEHIND AUSTRALIAN REFUGEE DRAMA ‘AKONI’ IN A REFUGEE WEEK Q&A SCREENING AT CINEMA NOVA.

Cinema Nova to host an intimate Q&A screening of the powerful Australian independent drama AKONI on June 19, the first day of Refugee Week.

On Sunday June 19 (4pm), the Cinema Nova team will be joined by writer/director/star Gemma Chanelle Hayes, star Kit Esuruoso, Human Rights lawyer Alisson Battison, and host Aminata Conteh-Biger of the Aminata Maternal Foundation for a Q&A following a screening of Hayes’ debut feature AKONI. Ticket includes a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival. Tickets are on sale now.

UK actor Kit Esuruoso plays the titular role of Akoni, a homeless refugee who struggles to integrate into Australian society after escaping the conflict of his homeland of Nigeria. A young woman (Genna Chanelle Hayes) opens her home to him and the two find solace in each other’s company.
