BY DIRECTORS / FOR DIRECTORS
Following the success of Jennifer Peedom’s & Joseph Nizeti’s presentation of their film River at the inaugural event last month – HELM is pleased to announce that Ben Lawrence will present his film, Hearts and Bones, in person on July 7.
Premiering at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival, and followed up by Melbourne and Sydney Film Festival applause, Hearts and Bones sees a war photographer (Hugo Weaving) return home to prepare for his latest exhibition when a South Sudanese refugee appears at his door with a request – that he not exhibit any photographs of the massacre in his village, taken 15 years earlier. What emerges is an unlikely friendship between the two men.
This poignant, deftly directed film, dealing with the way grief lingers in our bodies long after we have expelled it from our minds. “Weaving and Luri bring tremendous sensitivity, courage, and complexity to their roles” Cameron Bailey, Toronto International Film Festival
Presented by The Golden Age Cinema, in partnership with Playground Films, HELM is a unique program of monthly film screenings that present Australian films, presented by their Australian directors. And featuring in-person conversations on the art of directing, by those at the creative helm of filmmaking.
Helm is an opportunity for filmmakers to reconnect with the creative community after years of isolation and introspection; to inspire each other, to learn, and to hear how others have approached getting their vision onto the big and not so big screens.
In the coming months, HELM features Yolanda Ramke & Ben Howling (Cargo) and Matthew Saville (Noise)… more to be announced soon.
