The Multi Award-winning Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin will be honoured for their outstanding global contribution and influence to film and screen, with the Gold Coast Film Festival’s most prestigious award – the Chauvel Award – at the Screen Industry Gala Awards on Thursday April 20, 2023.

Held at Warner Bros. Movie World, within a glittering ceremony that crowns some of the industry best within 10 categories, the Chauvel Award acknowledges significant contribution to the Australian screen industry and is named in honour of two of Australia’s pioneering filmmakers, Charles and Elsa Chauvel.

Catherine Martin will be in attendance at the Red Carpet Award Ceremony on April 20 accepting the award on behalf of herself and Baz. Catherine is one of Australia’s most respected and admired screen professionals with a hefty list of accolades.

CATHERINE MARTIN: “It’s particularly meaningful to Baz and me to be honoured with the Chauvel Award here in the Gold Coast, where we have based ourselves in recent years making Elvis. The filmmaking community and the city has been incredibly welcoming and supportive and we hope we’ll continue to make our work here in the future.”

BAZ LUHRMANN: “Having lived and worked here on the Gold Coast creating our film Elvis, there is no doubt that this is a town that loves movies and is uniquely suited to making them. As the industry here grows beyond just shooting movies into developing projects here and finishing them all the way through post-production, it’s an exciting place to be for filmmakers both emerging and established. With that in mind, I am deeply honoured to receive the Chauvel Award, alongside my wife Catherine Martin.”

Proudly, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin have adopted our own “Goldy-wood” as their home and join a long list of worthy recipients including Leah Purcell, producers Anthony Buckley, Sue Maslin, Sue Milliken and Jan Chapman, directors George Miller, Rolf de Heer and Gillian Armstrong, actors Sigrid Thornton, Bryan Brown, Deborah Mailman, Heath Ledger and Claudia Karvan, and cinematographer John Seale.

Celebrating its 21st year, Queensland’s biggest celebration of cinema, the Gold Coast Film Festival is on April 19 to 30, 2023.

The Gold Coast Film Festival is supported by its major partners Screen Queensland, City of Gold Coast, Major Events Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland and HOTA, Home of the Arts.
