2025 Flickerfest Short Film Trailer Pays Homage to Australian Film Icon, Strictly Ballroom

Flickerfest returns to Bondi Beach this January, celebrating its 34th year of showcasing the finest short films from Australia and around the globe. Sydney’s Academy® qualifying and BAFTA-recognised short film festival will roll out the red carpet at Bondi Beach from 17 – 26 January 2025.

With over 200 shorts featured across 18 competitive programs and 6 showcase sessions, Flickerfest 2025 boasts a stellar lineup of cinematic talent, all selected from more than 3,450 entries. In anticipation of the 2025 Festival, Flickerfest is excited to announce that this year’s official Festival Trailer will pay tribute to the iconic film, Strictly Ballroom, by acclaimed Australian film director, producer, writer and actor, Baz Luhrmann.

From the dance floor to the shores of Bondi, the 2025 Flickerfest trailer, titled “It’s Strictly The Best Short Films”, offers a fresh take on this cherished romantic comedy about a young dancer who dares to stand out. Join Scott (played by Lincoln Younes, known for Last King of the Cross, Caught, Tangle), who dreams of dazzling the Flickerfest audience with his unique moves, alongside his adoring partner, Fran (Mia Morrissey, known for Deadlock, Totally Completely Fine). Their journey brings unexpected reactions from Scott’s mother Shirley, played by Tara Morice, the original film’s star, and the judgmental film producer, portrayed by beloved comedian, actor, and filmmaker Paul McDermott.

Each year, Flickerfest supports an alumni team to further their skills and bring their own take to an iconic film and this year their tribute to Strictly Ballroom is written and directed by talented duo, Sophie Saville and Rowan Devereux, whose fun, creative and stylised romantic comedies have been audience favourites at Flickerfest, including Peach (2019) and Pineapple (2024).

Flickerfest is excited to see this talented cast and crew bring their unique interpretation of Strictly Ballroom, a film that has secured its special place in the Australian cultural landscape. Filming for the 2025 Flickerfest Trailer, “It’s Strictly The Best Short Films”, took place on Thursday 31st October at Bondi Pavilion. The Festival Trailer is scheduled for official release in early December.
