An option agreement for the screen rights to Dr Anna Haebich’s acclaimed true crime book, “Murdering Stepmothers: The Execution of Martha Rendell” has been secured. The adaptation will be penned by Brisbane-based screenwriter Robert Bourke with development of the screenplay already underway.

“Murdering Stepmothers,” based on the infamous 1909 case of Martha Rendell, the last woman hanged in Western Australia, is a meticulous blend of historical fact and immersive narrative. Haebich’s book explores themes of justice, prejudice, and the power of public opinion, brought to life through multiple character perspectives to cast fresh light on a notorious story that gripped the nation and still resonates today.

Dr Anna Haebich, a Member of the Order of Australia and multi-award-winning author, is widely recognised for her groundbreaking work in Australian history and for delving deeply into issues of gender, crime, and societal bias.

“This is a powerful narrative about the price of prejudice and the quest for truth in a society grappling with change,” said Robert Bourke. “It’s a honour to bring Anna’s immersive story to the screen for new audiences.”
