The 270-degree screen format expands to Sydney’s north and the Illawarra, bringing Event Cinemas to eight SCREENX locations across Australia and New Zealand
EVT announce that Event Cinemas Macquarie and Event Cinemas Shellharbour will be the next two SCREENX cinemas to open this December.
This marks the latest milestone in the Group’s ongoing premiumisation of its entertainment offering, and partnership with global cinema technology company CJ 4DPLEX, bringing the total to eight SCREENX locations. Event Cinemas opened the first SCREENX in Queensland in 2023, and has since taken this unique format across Australia, and will open in New Zealand in December.
SCREENX brings a premium cinema offering, extending the film image across three walls of the auditorium using panoramic side-screen projection, immersing audiences in the action beyond the boundaries of a standard screen to 270 degrees. The format has become a drawcard for blockbusters and popular with customers, with premium large format a key part of Event Cinemas’ growth strategy as the business continues to invest in the moviegoing experience.
At Macquarie, the new SCREENX auditorium will undergo a full refurbishment with all-new premium seating. The new auditorium will feature screens across the front and side walls. Seating includes:
● Full recliners. A custom-built recliner seat designed for Event Cinemas, with generous legroom and a full stretch recline.
● Standard premium seats. Event Cinemas’ original seat, and still the biggest and best in the standard range, offering a spacious, comfortable seat at everyday value. SCREENX will join Macquarie’s existing Gold Class, Event Junior and Original formats featuring multiple premium seating options. Shellharbour, will also a receive a SCREENX auditorium upgrade, featuring a range of seating options:
● Full recliners. A custom-built recliner seat designed for Event Cinemas, with generous legroom and a full stretch recline.
● Standard premium seats. Event Cinemas’ original seat, and still the biggest and best in the standard range, offering a spacious, comfortable seat at everyday value.
● Double daybeds. stretch out with large, cushioned lounging seats for you and a friend or partner, allowing you to take your movie going to the ultimate state of relaxation.
SCREENX will be Shellharbour’s first premium large format experience, joining its existing Event Junior offer.

Event Cinemas Macquarie and Event Cinemas Shellharbour SCREENX auditoriums will open in time for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, landing in Australian cinemas on 17 December. Tickets are on sale now for Macquarie, and on Wednesday, 7 October for Shellharbour.
