Sydney-based entity Screenxcope have acquired Australian & New Zealand Theatrical & Festival rights to Amanda Nell Eu’s debut feature Tiger Stripes – winner of Best Film at Cannes 2023 Critics’ Week- the 1st Malaysian & Southeast Asian film to have achieved this feat.
The film, one of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Hidden Gem picks from Cannes sidebars 2023, stars Malaysian actress Zafreen Zairizal as Zaffan, a teenage girl whose body undergoes strange changes. The 95-minute horror-tinged Malay-language film was also up for Cannes’ Camera d’Or prize for Best 1st film & officially been chosen to represent Malaysia in the 96th Academy Awards (Oscars) in the Best International Feature Film category.
Tiger Stripes had its round of Official Selections at all the major AU & NZ festivals including Sydney Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, New Zealand International Film Festival, BIFF, Darwin International Film Festival and is nominated for Best Youth Film at prestigious Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2023 to be held in HOTA Gold Coast.
The acquisition with Films Boutique was negotiated by Screenxcope.com Pty Director Sakib Iftekhar whose previous curation credits include Cannes Un Certain Regard title Rehana Maryam Noor besides other South Asian festival favourites Pett Kata Shaw, Amar Colony, The Salt in Our Waters, Memories of Gloomy Monsoons, Foreigners Only & Things I Could Never Tell My Mother (documentary feature).
Tiger Stripes is produced by Foo Fei Ling, Patrick Mao Huang, Fran Borgia, Juliette Lepoutre, Pierre Menahem, Jonas Weydemann, Ellen Havenith and Yulia Evina Bhara & collected 7 project development credits during productions that includes Open Doors Locarno Festival, Network of Asian Fantastic Films, Talents Tokyo, NMSP Project Development Fund, Hubert Bals Fund Bright Future, Less Is More event and SEAFIC Lab.
Tiger Stripes will open in AU & NZ cinemas in early 2024 followed by digital and non-theatrical releases.
