Seven winners were picked from a field of 88 entries for the 2016 MIFF Shorts Awards, which were announced last night. The winners shared a total cash prize pool of $42,000, with the Best Short, Best Australian Film and Best documentary winners now eligible to submit their films to the upcoming 89th Academy Awards.

 And the winners are…

Melbourne International Film Festival Award for Best Experimental Short Film 

Nightlife (Cyprien Gaillard, director; Simone Manwarring andSprüth Magers, producers)

RMIT University for Best Documentary Short Film 

Fairy Tales (Rongfei Guo, director; Rongfei Guo, Kit Chung, producers)

SAE Award for Best Animation Short Film

Deer Flower (Kangmin Kim, director and producer)

Cinema Nova Award for Best Fiction Short Film 

In The Year of Monkey (Wregas Bhanuteja, director and producer)

Swinburne Award for Emerging Australian Filmmaker 

Luci Schroder for Slapper

Film Victoria Erwin Rado Award for Best Australian Short Film 

Trespass (Mirrah Foulkes, director; Alex White, Producer)

City of Melbourne Grand Prix for Best Short Film

Mrs. Metro (Aggelos Papantoniou, director; Mark Lycette, producer)
