Legion, the Marvel Television/FX Productions super hero series set in the same continuity as Fox’s X-Men movie series, is set for an early 2017 simultaneous debut in 125 countries, including Australia. Here, it will air on Foxtel’s FX channel.

Created by Noah Hawley, Legion stars Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, The Guest) as David Haller, an immensely powerful psychic mutant who struggles with mental illness. Rachel Keller (Fargo), Jean Smart (Fargo), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Jeremie Harris (A Walk Among the Tombstones), Amber Midthunder (Hell or High Water), Katie Aselton (The League) and Bill Irwin (Interstellar) also feature.

Comics fans will know that Haller is in fact the son of Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy, depending on what day it is), but whether that bit of continuity will make the transition to the small screen is anyone’s guess. the exact nature of the deal between FX Productions and Marvel is unknown, but probably includes inviolable strictures on character use across platforms. Still, you never know.

The eight episode first season of Legion shoots in Vancouver, with a release date some time in 2017.
